A few things to think about prior to your project.

Do I need a permit?
Requirements vary from town to town, but permits are always required.  Check with your local building department.

How deep in the ground do I go and why?
You must excavate a minimum of 4 feet below grade to obtain "frost protection".  You should also consider how much concrete you want showing once the job is completed.

How wide should he excavation site be?
Safety is our first requirement.  Excavated hole must be 3 feet on either side of the wall.

Do I need steel?
In most additions and garages steel is not a necessity, however if the consistency of your land is wet or unstable it may be a good idea to put steel in the footing as an added precaution.  Steel in houses are always a plus, and for retaining walls steel is structurally a must.
